Sole trader who repaired agricultural and industrial sheds fined after worker injured

William Henry Swanson, trading as LTS Construction has been fined following an incident when a worker suffered serious injuries after falling through a fragile roof light of a grain store. LTS Construction has now ceased trading.  Wick Sheriff Court heard that on 25 September 2019, an employee of Mr Swanson was working on a grain store roof to remove and replace damaged cement roof sheets and fragile roof lights. He stood on a moss-covered roof light which gave way beneath his weight. He fell approximately 4.5m onto the concrete floor below. He sustained injuries to his head, ribs, pelvis and wrist. He suffers from short term memory loss and anxiety and has not worked since.

£300,000 fine following leg amputation

A sawmill company has been fined after a worker was crushed by a 1.8 tonne concrete panel.  BSW Sawmills Ltd has been fined, after admitting to health and safety breaches which led to a 19-year-old worker having his leg amputated above the knee after being crushed by a concrete beam.

Father died in explosion while working with son

Chemical company Briar Chemicals Ltd has been fined £1 million after a 46-year-old maintenance contractor died in an explosion at its site Norwich.  On 27 July 2018, Rob Cranston was carrying out repair work on a mixing vessel during a planned period of shutdown maintenance.

North Yorkshire Police will be working with partner agencies including the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Immigration Enforcement in a bid to combat offences related to the use of commercial vehicles on our road network as part of a co-ordinated national operation.

Sports nutrition supplier in court after worker loses fingers

A Liverpool sports nutrition product supplier has been fined after an employee had three fingers of their right hand severed whilst cleaning a screw conveyor.  Liverpool Magistrates Court heard how, on the 13 September 2019, a production operative, employed by Applied Nutrition Ltd at their Webber Estate site in Knowsley, was cleaning one of the product transfer screws.

Company fined after worker paralysed by fall at Watford Football Stadium

A company has been fined after a worker was paralysed after falling 11 metres down a stairwell at a football stadium when the concrete floor he was working on collapsed.Peterborough Magistrates’ Court heard that on 14 June 2016, workers were constructing a new hospitality and seating stand at the stadium of Watford Football Club.

Firm fined after health and safety breach

A paper recycling company has been fined £75,000 after a worker sustained multiple injuries after falling through a moving conveyor.  The incident took place in January 2018, with the unnamed employee sustaining serious crush injuries to his right leg as a result of the fall. Westminster Magistrates Court heard how the worker was injured whilst trying to remove contaminants from a paper load prior to it entering a baler.

Contractor fined after employee falls from scaffolding

A shopfitting company has been fined after an employee suffered multiple fractures after falling fifteen feet from scaffolding.Manchester Magistrates Court heard how on the 24 October 2019, an employee of TA Knox Shopfitters Ltd was working from a tower scaffold at the front of the Footasylum Store in the Trafford Centre, Manchester, when the scaffold moved throwing him off balance.

Construction company fined after three contractors fall

A construction company has been fined following an incident where three contractors fell from height suffering serious injuries.  Three bricklayers fell approximately 2.5 metres onto a concrete floor sustaining serious injuries ranging from a broken back, a broken sternum to a swollen knee. The three workers fell through a temporary stairwell cover, which gave way underneath them because it had not been correctly fitted. The incident happened on 18 July 2018.
