Warmer weather means potentially more time outside for may occupations — and more contact with ticks and biting or stinging insects. Here's how to protect yourself this month. Martin Mulholland investigates.
Tick Awareness
Ticks lurk in long grass, woodland, and undergrowth, and can carry Lyme disease.
Wear long sleeves and trousers, tuck trousers into socks, and stick to paths. Check your skin, hairline, and clothing afterwards.
Remove any tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers, pulling steadily upward.
See a doctor if you develop a spreading rash or flu-like symptoms.
Bees, Wasps and Hornets
Stay calm around stinging insects - swatting provokes them.
Keep food and sugary drinks covered outdoors, and check cans before sipping. Know who around you carries an allergy and where their medication is kept.
Midges, Mosquitoes and Horseflies
Use insect repellent on exposed skin, especially near water or at dusk. Light, loose clothing offers added protection.
Know the Warning Signs
Seek urgent help for any severe reaction - swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or dizziness. These can be life-threatening.
Reminder
> Carry repellent.
> Check for ticks and carry a tick removal tool.
> Look out for colleagues with known allergies.
