A roofer who failed to erect scaffolding at a building in north-west London has been jailed after a worker plunged 16 feet to his death.  Andrei-Ionel Hutanu, 33, was working on the roof of a commerical premises in Neasden on August 19, 2019, when he fell and landed on a concrete alleyway below, suffering catastrophic head and neck injuries.

A school boy plunged to his death down a manhole after a contractor failed to implement health and safety measures on a construction site near a play park, a court has heard.  Shea Ryan, 10, suffered a severe head injury after falling more than 20feet into water at the bottom of the uncovered manhole in July 2020. He was able to get into the site because the fence around it was not secure.

A Lancashire trucking company has been fined £30,000 after a mechanic died while repairing a forklift truck.  Joseph Robinson, a mechanic at E. Jackson (Chatburn) Limited, was working with a new employee as they attempted to fix a steering fault on a forklift truck at the firm’s site at Salthill Industrial Estate in Clitheroe on 13 October 2020. While doing this, Mr Robinson, 39, told the new employee, who was driving the forklift truck, to move the vehicle forwards.

An unlicensed asbestos removal company has been fined £80k after its director was jailed last month after failing to ensure the safe removal of the dangerous product.  In September 2021 at an address in Stockport, Asbestos Boss Limited removed an asbestos insulating board ceiling from a domestic integral garage with little to no control measures in place. The asbestos waste was then dumped at the property of the resident, littering the road and pavement with asbestos material.

A concrete manufacturer has been fined £1 million after a 24-year-old man died at a site in Nottingham.  Stewart Ramsay, from Mansfield, was working for Creagh Concrete Products Ltd (CCP) at its Thurgarton Lane site in Hoveringham when he suffered fatal head injuries on 15 March 2017.

The updated Network Rail Drugs and Alcohol standard (NR/L2/OHS/00120), which was published on 3 September 2022, will see an increase from 5% to 20% of all safety critical colleagues to be randomly selected for a D&A test each year. The standard will also see the drugs Ketamine and Tramadol added to the substance testing panel, while Propoxyphene has been removed. A Kent waste company has been fined £150,000 for several health and safety breaches.  City of London Magistrates’ Court heard that a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspection found that employees of BSP (Knockholt) Limited manually sorting through waste in its yard near Orpington were at risk of being struck by heavy machinery moving next to them in August 2020.

  THE Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says it is still investigating the death of a worker who died from chest injuries after being crushed by a cherry picker.  The Star reported after an inquest was held in March into the death of Uldis Senkans, who died aged 30, in the incident at CEW Recycling Group site on Merton Steet, St Helens, on November 8, 2019.

A staggering 85% of UK tradespeople would not know what to do in the event of a fire at work, new research has shown.  The study by IronmongeryDirect also showed just 12% of workers always have access to a fire extinguisher and 85% do not have one in their vehicle.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), through its Working Minds campaign which aims to prevent work-related stress and promote good mental health in the workplace, has compiled a list of resources to assist employers and workers during stress awareness month this April.  HSE and its twenty-two partner organisations across Great Britain have come together to urge workplaces to take action on work-related stress and mental health.
