Sellafield Ltd has been fined £400,000 after admitting a health and safety breach that resulted in a worker sustaining serious back injuries when he fell from a scaffolding ladder at the nuclear site.

A PENNINGTON company has been accused of failing to ensure health and safety practices after a worker was hurt.  HS Butyl Ltd, based at Gordleton Industrial Park, is charged with one count of contravening the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 by not ensuring measures were taken to prevent access to dangerous parts of machinery, leading to an employee being injured.

A manufacturing company has been fined after an employee lost parts of two fingers when his hand got caught in a machine producing face masks.  The 55-year-old machine operator was working a night shift for Alpha Solway Limited at the company’s Yew Tree Way site in Warrington, on 22 April 2021.

David Mobsby, was working at Blatchington Mill School, a community school in Hove, and suffered a fatal head injury when he fell from the ladder on 3 August 2018.  Mr Mobsby, 71, had been cleaning the roof of a bike shed at the school on Nevill Avenue, Hove, using a standard-length broom and a telescopic surface cleaner before falling approximately 2.5 metres onto the tarmacked surface below.

A survey has revealed that UK businesses strongly support health and safety regulations, highlighting fears over the impact of the Retained EU Law Bill, which is in the House of Lords at committee stage.  According to the research by Unchecked UK with support from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) among others, seven in 10 (69%) businesses are not willing to accept lower health and safety standards as part of the Retained EU Law Bill.

A waste firm and its director have been found guilty over the death of a worker who was run over by a reversing lorry.  Yamal Mohamed was fatally injured at a site run by FDS Waste Services in Poole, Dorset, in December 2018.  Thirty-nine-year-old Yamal was working as a 'totter' – pulling out bigger pieces of waste by hand which might get stuck in machinery.

Those responsible for the safety of high-rise residential buildings in England have six months from April to register with the new Building Safety Regulator.  The Building Safety Regulator was established to protect high-rise residents from unsafe building practices in England in response to the Grenfell Tower fire.  Under the Building Safety Act, high-rise residential buildings which are 18 metres tall or higher, or at least seven storeys, with two or more residential units are defined as ‘higher-risk’.

The study by Evac+Chair International found a quarter of business leaders are not aware how many of their employees have access needs and four in five are unsure about their responsibilities.  The report, called Risky Business, also found one in 10 business leaders are either not prepared, or unsure if they are adequately prepared, to safely evacuate employees needing assistance.
